Leggings That Pass the Squat Test Without Costing $100

I've had $20 leggings go see-through on the first squat and $100 leggings pill in a month. Price isn't the signal. Fabric, gusset and waistband are. Here's the fitting-room routine.

I've owned $20 leggings that turned see-through the first time I squatted at the gym, and $100 leggings that pilled between the thighs within a month. So no, price isn't the signal. These are the things that actually predict whether a pair is worth it.

The fitting-room routine

Do this every time, even if it feels silly:

1. **Deep squat in front of the mirror**, back to the mirror, under the brightest light you can find. If you see skin or underwear, put them back. 2. **Lunge and high knee.** Does the waistband roll down or the crotch seam pull? 3. **Pinch the fabric.** If it feels thin and slippery, it'll likely go sheer when stretched.

Two minutes. It saves you from the most common legging regret.

Fabric matters more than brand

  • **Nylon-spandex blends** feel smooth, resist pilling better and tend to be more opaque. My favorite for gym use.
  • **Polyester-spandex blends** are cheaper and wick sweat well. Quality varies a lot between brands.
  • **Cotton blends** are comfy for lounging but bag out at the knees and hold sweat. Not for workouts.

The details that separate good from bad

  • **Gusset.** A diamond-shaped panel in the crotch. Without it, the seams meet in one spot and pull or wear through. Cheap leggings skip it.
  • **Flatlock seams.** Flat, wide seams reduce chafing on long runs.
  • **Waistband height and width.** A wide, high waistband stays put during squats. Thin elastic bands roll and dig.
  • **Pockets.** Side thigh pockets that fit a phone are the most useful feature in modern leggings. Back waistband pockets are too small for anything but a key.

Why leggings pill

Friction. Inner thighs rubbing, bag straps, rough gym benches. Better fabrics resist it, but every legging pills eventually. A cheap fabric shaver fixes light pilling.

Care that adds a year

  • Cold water, inside out.
  • No fabric softener. It coats the fibers and kills stretch and wicking.
  • Air dry. Dryer heat breaks down spandex fast. This is the number one reason leggings lose shape.

Price sweet spot

In my experience, mid-priced leggings around $35 to $60 from major sportswear brands, bought on sale, perform close to premium pairs. The premium price buys nicer fabric hand-feel and colors more than performance.

Where to buy

Nike and adidas run frequent sales on leggings, with extra member discounts on their own sites. Dick's Sporting Goods carries many brands so you can do the squat test on several in one trip. Amazon has affordable options, but read reviews that mention squat-proofing and sizing before buying.

Verdict

Squat, lunge, pinch. Look for a gusset and a wide waistband, keep them out of the dryer, and buy mid-priced pairs on sale. You'll get leggings that last without paying luxury prices.
